Structure and Function focuses on understanding and teaching about how an organism's characteristics enable it to survive and reproduce in its particular environment.

Course Objectives

  • Identify the basic needs of living things
  • Examine how an organism's structures and functions work together to help it survive
  • Explore how a cell's structures and functions help it survive
  • Use elements of the scientific process in teaching
  • Explore how to use models in teaching life science topics

Course Syllabus

Session 1: Structure and Function of Organisms
Explore the relationship between structure and function and see how the traits of organisms enable them to survive in the environment in which they live. Teaching and learning strategies focus on processes of science and science education.

Session 2: Structure and Function of Cells
Examine and expand their concept of the cell — the basic functional unit of life — focusing specifically on the structures that enable cells to meet their individual requirements. Teaching and learning strategies focus on the use of models in teaching.

Additional Course Information

We recommend course modules be taken in order. If this is not possible, it's important to have a basic knowledge of the content and methodology described in the preceding courses.
