Understanding Heat Transfer advances understanding and effective teaching about radiation, conduction, and convection and how heat transfer influences density.
Course Objectives
- Define different ways that energy is transferred between materials as heat
- Explain how convection and conduction influence density in theory and in real-world examples
- Examine formative assessment strategies, including those that pinpoint students' prior conceptions
- Examine teaching models that make use of formative assessment for teaching these topics
Course Syllabus
Session 1:
Mechanisms of Heat Transfer
Participants investigate mechanisms of heat transfer, including radiation, convection, and conduction, and explore how heat transfer affects the density of a substance.
Session 2:
Formative Assessment
In a companion methodology session, participants look at heat transfer in the context of how you can use your understanding of what students already know to plan instruction to improve their understanding.
Additional Course Information
- 15 contact hours
- Third in a series of four courses for teachers of middle school physical science
- Other courses in the series:
- A full survey course (45 contact hours), Teaching Middle School Physical Science, is also available.
‡ recommended before taking this course
We recommend course modules be taken in order. If this is not possible, it's important to have a basic knowledge of the content and methodology described in the preceding courses.
