Get Wild About Reading! Between the Lions Preschool Professional Development
will help you increase your understanding of key practices for working with young children to develop early literacy skills. In these four sessions, you will be watching and analyzing video examples shot in real preschool settings, read about these practices, and plan activities that incorporate useful video segments from the PBS series, Between the Lions. Four sessions cover key content and methodologies for teaching early literacy skills.
Course Structure
The structure of this course is based on the understanding that adults, like children, learn new content by building upon what they already know and constructing it in their own way. Each of the following five sections of this course plays a specific role in this process.
What Do You Do?:
- provides an opportunity for you to assess your current practice with respect to that topic;
- encourages you to ask questions and set some personal goals for learning for this session; and
- helps you uncover your prior knowledge so that both you and your teacher are aware of your existing understanding.
Ideas in Action:
- gives you the chance to explore the topic by watching and analyzing examples of the practices in action, shot in real preschool settings.
Examine the Topic:
- provides you with a deeper explanation of the theory behind the practices, using short, easy to understand readings and commentary from experts; and
- lets you watch segments from Between the Lions and think about how they demonstrate a particular concept, or how you might use it to help children learn a skill.
Put It into Practice:
- ties the practices to standards and benchmarks; and
- lets you plan activities based on what you have learned in this session.
Reflect on Your Learning:
- lets you assess what you have learned in the session.
