A Course Module

<<  Back to Course Catalog

Plants and Animals examines how the structures and functions of plants and animals help them meet their needs as living things.

Course Objectives

  • Examine the distinction between producers and consumers
  • Investigate the role of structures and how they enable plants and animals to meet their needs
  • Trace the life cycles of a variety of plants and animals
  • Use concept mapping to help assess student understanding
  • Explore the role that live organisms can play in the elementary classroom

Course Syllabus

Session 1: Plants as Producers
Consider plants as producers — living things that transfer the energy of the sun to substance. Teaching and learning strategies focus on the use of concept maps.

Session 2: Animals and Consumers
Consider animals as consumers — living things that must ingest food. Teaching and learning strategies focus on effective uses of live plants and animals in the classroom.
