Structure and Function
focuses on understanding and teaching about how an organism's characteristics enable it to survive and reproduce in its particular environment.
Course Objectives
-
Identify the basic needs of living things
-
Examine how an organism's structures and functions
work together to help it survive
-
Explore how a cell's structures and functions
help it survive
-
Use elements of the scientific process in teaching
-
Explore how to use models in teaching life science topics
Course Syllabus
Session 1:
Structure and Function of Organisms
Explore the relationship between structure and function
and see how the traits of organisms enable them to survive
in the environment in which they live.
Teaching and learning strategies focus on processes
of science and science education.
Session 2:
Structure and Function of Cells
Examine and expand their concept of the cell — the
basic functional unit of life — focusing specifically
on the structures that enable cells to meet their
individual requirements. Teaching and
learning strategies focus on the use of models in teaching.
Additional Course Information
- First in a series of four courses for teachers of
middle school life science
- Other courses in the series:
- A full survey course,
Teaching Middle School Life Science, is also available.
We recommend course modules be taken in order. If this is not possible,
it's important to have a basic knowledge of the content and methodology
described in the preceding courses.
