Kentucky’s adult education instructors attend training sessions as part of a three-year professional development plan that is based on Kentucky Adult Education’s adoption of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). This training follows the Office of Vocational and Adult Education’s Standards-in-Action Innovations for Standards-Based Education. Instructors develop a full understanding of the knowledge and skills that the CCSS cover. In the video, instructors work together in a learning community to begin aligning their resources to the standards.
This resource is part of the Guide to the Common Core Standards: Kentucky Adult Education collection. KYAE offers these materials for consideration by other adult educators. We recommend interested parties first review each the facilitator’s guide for aligning English/language arts resources to better understand the context of the videos.

The professional development session in this clip was designed to help adult education instructors align the resources they use to the common core standards. Adult education trainer Dawn Hanzel shows the group how to analyze a resource and decide if it should be retained, supplemented, or replaced. The process outlined here offers a way for instructors to become familiar with a resource; alerts them if a resource is tightly, partially, or not aligned with standards; and informs them about gaps in coverage.
The list of “Supplemental Media” above includes many of the materials that were provided during the training session.
You can see all of the standards at Kentucky Adult Education’s Common Core Standards webpage.
If you are sharing this process with other adult education instructors, you might find it helpful to follow the Resource Alignment Guidelines.
