First-grade teacher Felicia Cumings-Smith (Blake Elementary, Louisville, Ky.) assesses a student's reading skills.
This video of reading assessment in primary was originally part of a professional development video series, "Assessing Primary Readers," produced by KET in 2003, and also in the multimedia professional development resource Literacy Strategies in Action produced in 2006 by KET in collaboration with the Kentucky Department of Education as part of the Reading First initiative.
This is one of two videos featuring teacher Felicia Cumings-Smith formally assessing the reading of one of her first-grade students. Formal assessment is an important part of sound instruction. The assessments allows the teacher to monitor student progress, and her records allow her to make instructional decisions to ensure the student's individual progress.
Brainstorm some ways to organize assessment records of individual students that facilitate instructional planning.
What characteristics of highly effective teaching and learning do you observe?
Academic standards correlations on Teachers' Domain use the Achievement Standards Network (ASN) database of state and national standards, provided to NSDL projects courtesy of JES & Co.
We assign reference terms to each statement within a standards document and to each media resource, and correlations are based upon matches of these terms for a given grade band. If a particular standards document of interest to you is not displayed yet, it most likely has not yet been processed by ASN or by Teachers' Domain. We will be adding social studies and arts correlations over the coming year, and also will be increasing the specificity of alignment.
