For students to master many of the geometry concepts on the GED^® Mathematics Test, they will need a foundation in concepts related to lines and angles.

Students will need to understand the relationship between points, lines, and angles.
They will also need to understand the meaning of parallel and perpendicular as special relationships between two different lines.

This lesson introduces lines and angles, including how to name angles and recognize degrees. It also extends the discussion of lines to two important lessons—parallel lines and perpendicular.

Points, lines, line segments and angles are named with capital letters.

A line continues in both directions. It is named for any two points on it.

A line segment is part of a line. It is named for its endpoints.

An angle is the opening between two half-lines, called rays. An angle can be named by its measure in degrees, with three letters, or by the letter at its vertex.

Question What are three ways to name the angle in the image to the left?

Step 1 Look for the symbol ˚ to find the degree measure.

This is a 45˚ degree angle.

Step 2 Find the letter at the vertex. Use the angle symbol ∠ before the letter.

One name for this angle is ∠Q.

Step 3 Use three letters to name the angle.The middle letter is the vertex. The other two letters name points on the rays.

Another name for the angle is ∠PQR.

Answer 45˚ angle, ∠Q, ∠PQR.

3 Perpendicular and Parallel Lines

Lines MNEF

A right angle is a square corner, like the corner of a sheet of paper. A right angle measures 90˚.

If two lines intersect at right angles, they are perpendicular lines. The symbol for perpendicular lines is ⊥. The symbol for right angles is a small square ☐.

Two lines on the same flat surface may never meet. If so, they are parallel lines. The symbol for parallel lines is ║.

Question Which pair of lines is perpendicular? Which pair of lines is parallel?

Step 1 Use the corner of a piece of paper to check where lines AB and XY meet. It is a right angle.

Lines AB and XY are perpendicular.

Step 2 Extend lines MN and EF in your mind. They would never meet, even if you made them longer.

Lines MN and EF are parallel.

Answer Perpendicular lines are AB and XY. Parallel lines are MN and EF.

Introducing Lines and Angles is the first of eight self-paced lessons in the “Lines, Angles, and Triangles” section of KET’s GED^® Geometry Professional Development Online Course. This lesson introduces lines and angles, including how to name angles and recognize degrees. It also extends the discussion of lines to two important pairs of lines that are featured in later lessons⎯parallel lines and perpendicular lines.
