Make a Wind Gauge (Document)
Here are some Frame, Focus and Follow-up suggestions for using this video in a math lesson.
What is Frame, Focus and Follow-up?
Frame: Sometimes it's necessary to take measurements before deciding on a location for an activity or an object. For example, say you wanted to find out the sunniest spot in your house for your plant. How could you test out a few spots before deciding where you place your plant? The same idea of testing can be applied to flying a kite. Have you ever tried to fly a kite? Are there certain weather conditions that would make it easier or harder?
Focus: During the video segment focus on how Bianca goes about measuring the wind strength in different spots around the park.
Make your own Wind Gauge using the directions found on the Cyberchase website .
BIANCA: Happy birthday!
MIKAELA: Thanks so much!
BIANCA : Look! Isn’t this the best present?
MIKAELA: I love it…I think.
BIANCA: It’s a kite.
MIKEALA: Wow. Let’s go try it out.
BIANCA: Whoa! First things first.
BIANCA: We have to find the best place to fly a kite. So we’re going to make a wind gauge. A wind gauge shows how fast the wind blows.
MIKAELA: Cool! Where did you get the directions?
BIANCA: From the Cyberchase Web site.
MIKAELA: “One: Glue your wind gauge to an index card.” Bianca, can I do it?
BIANCA: “Two: Make a hole where the black dot is. Tie the string through the hole.”
MIKAELA: I’d really like to do it.
BIANCA: “Three. Attach a paper clip to the other end of the string.”
BIANCA: Great! Let’s go try it out. You are gonna have the best birthday ever!
MIKAELA: This looks like a great place to fly a kite!
BIANCA: I don’t know. Let’s see what the wind gauge says. Yikes…the wind speed is off the charts!
MIKAELA: You’re holding it the wrong way. Hold the card so the string lines up with zero. Now, point the arrow toward the wind. What number does the string line up with?
BIANCA: Five. The wind gauge says is five.
MIKAELA: Five feels like a good amount of wind to fly a kite.
BIANCA: Well, it has to be the best place. Come with me.
BIANCA: This is it! This is perfect! The wind gauge says 8. So, 8 is greater than 5, so the wind is faster here.
MIKAELA: Great! Let’s fly the kite.
BIANCA: Not yet. There’s this other place I want to try.
MIKAELA: Let’s fly the kite here first.
BIANCA: But, the other place would be better. The city is planning on building wind turbines there to generate electricity.
MIKAELA: Where is it?
BIANCA: On Staten Island. This place called Fresh Kills.
MIKAELA: Fresh Kills? Bianca, that’s a dump.
BIANCA: Well, maybe it’s not as nice the view here…
MIKAELA; I mean it…Fresh Kills really is a dump. A place where tons of garbage are buried.
BIANCA: Really?
MIKAELA: There are plans to turn the landfill into a park. But since that hasn’t happened yet, that’s not where I want to spend my birthday!
BIANCA: No?
MIKAELA: Bianca, I really want to try out my present. Right here, right now. Okay?
BIANCA: Sorry. I guess I just got carried away. I just wanted to find the perfect place to fly it so you could have an awesome birthday.
MIKAELA: Let me fly it first, and then I’ll give you a turn.
BIANCA: You promise? Cause I really love this kite.
MIKAELA: I promise…No strings attached!
