In this professional development video, Liberty High School physics teacher Tim Lamb takes steps to explain a fundamental principle that is often confusing for students: the difference between mass and weight. As the lesson begins, Tim uses a student responder tool to assess students’ prior knowledge and beliefs about weight and mass. Based on that data, he provides direct instruction and poses questions to guide student thinking. Importantly, Tim actively encourages students to engage in social constructivism, a process by which students construct meaning by solving problems together in collaborative groups.

open Discussion Questions

  • Outline the steps Tim Lamb uses to teach the difference between weight and mass. What specific steps or teaching methods make this a successful lesson?
  • Prior to teaching a concept, what are some of the methods you use to evaluate what your students know?
  • Do you encourage social constructivism in your classroom? If not, what might be some of the benefits of doing so? If you do, describe some outcomes.
