SERVE REL

Listen to audio of teachers discussing vocabulary strategies, as you watch images from their classrooms in these slideshows from SERVE. In the first slideshow, three kindergarten teachers explain how they use picture cards to introduce new target vocabulary words that students will encounter in a story that the teacher will read to them. The images on the cards help students get a mental image of what the new word describes, while the teacher discusses the word in context to give it meaning. In the second slideshow, two kindergarten teachers explain how they make time during the day to engage their students in rich conversation, re-casting simple vocabulary with new target vocabulary words when possible. The conversations are unscripted, and allow students to talk about their lives using new vocabulary.
