In this letter written to his friend and mentor Charles Lyell less than three weeks after the publication of On the Origin of Species, Darwin describes the reaction of the great anatomist Richard Owen to his theory
Richard Owen, though he had a difficult temperament, was one of the most respected scientists of his day, and Darwin had entrusted many of the fossils he had collected in South America to Owen for analysis. But Owen did not accept Darwin's theory, and was apparently jealous of the interest generated by On the Origin of Species. Here Darwin describes a conversation with Owen shortly after its publication.
