In 1859, Charles Darwin published On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, introducing the powerful and controversial idea that all the diverse species on Earth have arisen from natural processes. His theory flew in the face of those who believed in "divine design." And so the battle rages on between evolutionary biologists and creationists. In this interactive Evolution timeline, users can follow the history of evolutionary biology, its social and legal challenges, and attempts at reconciliation between the two camps.

The idea of evolution did not begin with Charles Darwin, yet he was its greatest champion. The arguments he laid out in Origin of Species made evolution mainstream science soon after the work was published in 1859. By the latter part of the 19th century, many theologians had accepted the theory of evolution as fact and sought ways to reconcile evolutionary science with religion. Yet, Darwin's revolution -- perhaps the greatest in the history of science -- inspired a counter-revolution that continues today.

"Evolution Revolution" is a timeline charting both the rise of evolutionary science and the social controversies surrounding its acceptance.
