Science and the Living World is a graduate-level professional development course for elementary school teachers, designed to enhance understanding and teaching of life science. In two sessions, you will investigate life science topics using hands-on activities and online resources including video segments, interactive activities, readings, and other multimedia materials. These resources are drawn from Teachers' Domain, WGBH's digital library service.

Science and the Living World
This course helps you answer the essential question of how you can use processes of scientific inquiry to learn and teach about the living world.

Session 1: The Nature of Science
Learners explore about the nature and processes of science. Teaching and learning strategies focus on bringing the scientific process into the classroom.

Session 2: The Living World
Learners distinguish between living and nonliving things and identify the characteristics of life, including growth, reproduction, and dependence on air, water, and energy. Teaching and learning strategies focus on ways to uncover students' prior understanding.

All sessions and their content correspond to the National Science Education Standards.
