Teaching High School Physical Science is a graduate-level professional development course. It is designed to enhance your understanding of inquiry-based approaches to teaching standards-based physical science at the high school level. In eight sessions, you will investigate physical science topics, such as atomic structure, chemical reactions, motions and forces and the electromagnetic spectrum. Suggested teaching methodologies use a wide range of online resources, including video segments, interactive activities and readings. These resources are drawn from Teachers' Domain, WGBH's digital library service. The course provides an opportunity to explore novel learning environments and pedagogy applications that foster student interest, involve students in the research process, advance critical thinking/problem-solving skills, and develop conceptual understanding of physical science topics.
Eight sessions cover key content and methodologies for teaching physical science in the high school classroom.
Session 1: Processes of Science
Learners examine how scientists investigate the natural world, and how teachers and students can apply scientific inquiry to better understand physical science.
Session 2: Inquiry in Science and Learning
Learners explore how the nature and sequence of learning opportunities improve students' understanding of physical science.
Session 3: Prior Knowledge
Learners examine how learners' prior experiences and knowledge affect their ability to add new information to their knowledge base.
Session 4: Assessment on Chemical Reactions
Learners explore how specific teaching strategies help them assess what students understand about chemical reactions.
Session 5: Pedagogical Content Knowledge
Learners examine how combining content knowledge and knowledge of pedagogy can lead to more effective teaching of motions and forces.
Session 6: Making Energy Understandable
Learners explore how they can modify and shape their teaching strategies to meet the needs of individual learners.
Session 7: Improving a Lesson
Learners identify how they can apply principles of effective curriculum design to improve their own lesson planning.
Session 8: The Environment for Learning
Learners explore how their classroom environments can foster inquiry-based learning.
All sessions and their content correspond to the National Science Education Standards.
