In this video from Teachers As Learners, teachers in a professional development workshop explore concepts of balance at four different activity stations and learn about the importance of beginning each classroom activity with an exploratory phase to promote inquiry learning. The facilitators of the workshop describe their techniques to bring the participants' ideas to the surface before starting the investigation phase.

open Discussion Questions

You may find it useful to watch this video with a group of your colleagues and then discuss it together.
  • Describe the learning environment in this workshop in terms of respect, communication, asking questions, taking risks, and learning from mistakes.
  • What evidence do you see of these learners working collaboratively? What aspects of the environment encourage collaboration?
  • How do you think this type of environment helps an individual’s learning?
  • What other resources are available to the learners? Can you see or intuit evidence of their use?
  • Compare what you do in your classroom to foster a positive learning environment—and specifically, one that promotes inquiry—with what you observed in the video. Discuss these with your colleagues, and see if you can agree upon a prioritized list of environmental attributes.
