Teaching Tips: An Unexpected Guest

Here are some Frame, Focus and Follow-up suggestions for using this video in a math lesson.

What is Frame, Focus and Follow-up?

Frame: You may have heard people talking about budgets. A budget is basically a planned estimate of how much something, like a trip, will cost. How would you go about making a budget for a trip to the movies? What kind of things would cost money at the movies?

Focus: As you watch this segment, first notice what items Harry makes estimates about for his big date. Why does Harry have to adjust his budget at the restaurant? How does he do it? Does he use any addition or subtraction?

Follow Up: What kind of changes did Harry have to make to his budget at the restaurant? Plan a budget for a trip to see a major league baseball game. Write down all the things you would spend money on, and total it up. How much would it cost?
