Teaching Tips: Manatees

The following Frame, Focus and Follow-up suggestions are best suited for elementary or middle school students using this video in an English language arts or science lesson. Be sure to modify the questions to meet your students' instructional needs.

What is Frame, Focus and Follow-up?

Frame (ELA) What is the difference between a fact and an opinion? When can it be difficult to tell the difference between a fact and an opinion?

Focus (ELA) Listen for facts and opinions about manatees. Also, listen for comments that are hard to distinguish as either facts or opinions.

Follow Up (ELA) How would you define a fact? How would you define an opinion? Why is it important for us as learners to be clear about what the differences are?

Frame (SCI) What does it mean when we say a species is endangered? What species do you know that are on the endangered species list?

Focus (SCI) What has caused manatees to be placed on the endangered species list?

Follow Up (SCI) Recently U.S. officials have considered demoting manatees from the endangered species list to the threatened list because advances have been made in their protection and population. They would still be protected from harassment, poaching and killing, though. This is good news for the manatee and for the world. Discuss the implications to the world when animals are threatened with endangerment and extinction. What are the implications, for example, if there were no more polar bears due to global warming?
