In this video segment from Jakers!, we learn that it is fun to create stories to share with others. A good story includes who the story is about (the character), what it is about (the plot) and where it takes place (the setting). A storyteller can create any story with these building blocks. As readers, when we can identify these elements in a story, we can better interpret, understand and respond to it. Additionally, as an extra way to make a story entertaining, we can tell it in different ways, such as through a rap.

open Teaching Tips

The following Frame, Focus and Follow-up suggestions are best suited for elementary school students using this video in an English language arts lesson. Be sure to modify the questions to meet your students' instructional needs.

What is Frame, Focus and Follow-up?

Frame (ELA) What do you know about the character, setting and plot of a story? What do these terms mean?

Focus (ELA) Identify the character, setting and plot in this story.

Follow Up (ELA) How could we make this story very different by changing the setting? For example, what would have happened if instead of a pirate ship, Coco got onboard a spaceship full of alien creatures? What would the story be like then?

PIGGLEY: Hope I’m not too late.

STORYTELLER: No, you’re right in time. I was just about to explain to everybody the building blocks every story has. A who, that’s who the story is about, a what, what the story is about and a where - where the story takes place. Anybody, anybody, give me a who the story is about.

KID #1: Coco

STORYTELLER: Coco. Beautiful name. And somebody give me a place -“a where” the story is going to take place.

KID #2: At the beach.

STORYTELLER: Coco at the beach. Excellent. Let’s make this story up together. You’ve heard the story about dragons and things, Witches and pigs and special rings.

But the story I’m going to tell you -you should all know is about my friend, his name is Coco.

Coco was a guy who loved to have fun.

He could have more fun than anyone

He loved to have fun now understand

But his favorite sun was the sun and the sand

So Co-co, he loved the beach

And he kept all his favorite things in reach

He had a soda over here yummy, yummy snacks.

Laid in the sun, there on his back.

From sun up ‘till the sun come down, Coco was all at the beach

He was never in town

And let me tell you now what you gotta hear. There was something mysterious happening there. Over the waves, Coco looked ahead. He saw something he couldn’t believe, he said….. “What is that?

Oh that ain’t too hip!

He saw some kind of huge and humungous ship

It was coming towards him

It was coming fast

And he couldn’t hold it in, He said , “At Last”!

I have never seen a ship like this before and

I’ve got to go and get on board.

STORYTELLER: What do you think happened? Coco got off that beach and he ran onto that huge ship. What do you think happened?

KID: Pirates attacked.

STORYTELLER: Pirates came.

Now Coco was on this great big ship. It was kinda cool. He thought he was hip. He was walking round saying, “What up everybody?” Looking real cool, never ever being shoddy. When all of a sudden he heard a big Urgh!

And Pirates, yep they were right thar.

Right on the ship were Coco was. One had a little parrot who he called Buzz. And they started doing things, Pirates never do do….

They were handing out candy and crazy stuff,Oooo!

They were handing out sweets like bubble gum which kinda felt pretty good to his tummy- tum-tum.

He took all kinda sweets and he piled them up. Coco Coco, Coco, he just sucked them up.

Down to his belly and his belly’s starting to swell.

And that’s when Coco didn’t feel so well.

He said, “I guess I shouldn’t have eaten those pirate snacks”.

Then he had a little pirate snack attack.

He started to Burp!

And do sounds like that.

He couldn’t believe it.

He got fatter and fatter. And fatter and fatter

Until he sank the ship and then the tides they all started to rip

And just then, so it seemed

Co-co woke up.

It was all a dream!

And that’s the story of Coco.

Now don’t forget. That story like every story had the Who, the What, and the Where. The three basic building blocks of any good story. Got it?

KID: Got it.

STORYTELLER: Good!
