Lesson Plan: Measuring Object Length on a Number Line

 

Overview

In this Cyberchase activity, students watch a video clip in which a square is measured incorrectly by starting from the 1 inch mark. After students learn to measure from the 0 mark, they are taught to measure objects that are not aligned with 0 by creating a number sentence using subtraction.

The Lesson

Part I: Learning Activity

1. Read the following to your students: "In this Cyberchase episode, when the Hacker convinces Mr. Zero to leave Gollywood, the number 0 disappears from the city. Britney and Mary-Pat, two twin movie stars, are about to place their handprints on the walk of fame, but they have a disagreement about the size of their squares. Watch the video clip to see how the absence of 0 leads to a misunderstanding and pay attention to how the CyberSquad resolves the problem."

3. Distribute Handout : "Measuring Objects" .

4. Discuss the handout.

Part II: Assessment

Assessment: Level A (proficiency): Students practice measuring objects from zero, and some that do not start from zero, with lengths and positions that include quarters and halves.

Assessment: Level B (above proficiency): Students practice measuring objects with lengths and positions that include eighths, quarters, and halves.
