Students explore how to budget money as they practice column addition. In the Cyberchase video segments, Shari Spotter and the CyberSquad make a movie in four days. They realize after the first day that they must plan carefully to spend no more than their budget will allow. Each day they must make adjustments. Students are also asked to create budgets that meet particular totals.

The Lesson
Part I: Learning Activity
1. Read the following to your students: "Shari Spotter is asked to make a movie by the Headmaster of Frogsnorts. She has four days and a total of 600 snelfus. After spending 300 snelfus on the first day, she and the CyberSquad decide to make a budget. They can spend 100 snelfus on each of the remaining days. The categories in the budget are for the Crew, Food, and Film Stuff.
2. Distribute the Handout: "On a Budget" .
3. Ask the students to look at the handout and study how the money was spent the first day. Ask them to fill in the first table with possible ways to spend the rest of the money without going over the budget.
4. When students have completed Question 1 on the handout, ask them to exchange papers and to check each other's work.
5. Read the following to your students, "Watch the following video clips and use the table to record how the CyberSquad decides to spend their money each day and then compare it to your solution.
6. Play the Film Shoot: Day 2 QuickTime Video.
7. Play the Film Shoot: Day 3 QuickTime Video .
8. Play the Film Shoot: Day 4 QuickTime Video .
9. Discuss how the CyberSquad spent their money and whether they were able to stick to their budget. Ask students how the CyberSquad's budget compared to the one they created in Question 1.
10. Have students complete the handout.
11. Ask students to exchange papers and check each other's work.
12. Discuss with students how the CyberSquad determined the amount of money they could spend in each category.
Part II: Assessment
Assessment: Level A: (proficiency): Students are asked up to sum up two lists of expenses and determine if each buyer stayed within their budget.
Assessment: Level B: (above proficiency): Students are asked to assess a filmmaking budget.
