In this video segment from Cyberchase, Bianca takes on a new job in a print shop. Her first assignment is to enlarge a photograph of the King of Sloovoonia. The enlargement is supposed to be a life-size image of the six-foot tall king. Working with percentages, Bianca makes a few failed attempts before she finally creates an enlargement that is the proper height and width.

open Teaching Tips

Here are some Frame, Focus and Follow-up suggestions for using this video in a math lesson.

What is Frame, Focus and Follow-up?

Frame: Let’s say you made a drawing you really liked and the drawing was on a 4 inch by 4 inch piece of paper. If you wanted to enlarge that drawing using a copy machine so it was three times larger, what are the dimensions of the enlargement? How would you describe the increase in size in terms of a percentage?

Focus: In this video segment, Bianca has to enlarge a photograph so it will be a life-size image. Notice what happens when she sets the enlargement for 100%. Does that complete her task? What does she finally set the enlargement size for to get the correct result? How did she figure that out?

Follow Up: To make a six-foot poster of the king, what did Bianca set the height enlargement to? What did she set the width enlargement to? If you wanted to double the size of a photo, how would you describe the size increase using a percentage? At what percentage would you set the height and width if you wanted to make your photo half of its original size?

BIANCA: I've got a job interview. I'm saving up to buy something really special…a companion for Mojo, my dog. We both need a new puppy very badly. I want to get a golden retriever! They cost a lot of money.

MANAGER: So what experience do you have?

BIANCA: I once had a job in retail.

MANAGER: How long did you have that position?

BIANCA: Like, six hours.

EMPLOYEE: Sorry to interrupt, but we've got a problem. Pat got sick and had to go . . . right in the middle of doing that really important job!

MANAGER: Not the one for the King of Sloovoonia?!

EMPLOYEE: That's the one.

BIANCA: the King of Sloovoonia!! Wow!!

MANAGER: Oh, brother. That job needs to get done right…and soon. I need to find a replacement.

BIANCA: This could be my big chance. If I could finish the job that pat started, then maybe I could meet the King of Sloovoonia!

BIANCA: "You're too kind, your majesty. The pleasure is mine."

BIANCA: I'd like to show you what I can do. Let me take over for pat.

MANAGER: Hmmm. I don't know.

BIANCA: Please! You won't be sorry.

MANAGER: Well, ok.

MANAGER: The king is six feet tall. He wants a life-size copy of this photograph. It's already scanned in.

BIANCA: Great.

MANAGER: I'll show you what to do.

BIANCA: Oh, that's not necessary. I can figure it out.

MANAGER: Are you sure?

BIANCA: Sure I'm sure.

MANAGER: Okay.

BIANCA: Yikes! I hope I can do this.

BIANCA: This would not please the King at all…unless he wants to be known as the King of the toothpick people. The height is about right, but the width isn't.

BIANCA: I have to make the image wider.

BIANCA: Oh, no. It's his royal stubbiness.

MANAGER: How's it going?

BIANCA: Just great. I'm almost done.

BIANCA: This time I have to make sure to increase both the height and the width by the same amount. I'll try 100%. That sounds like a lot.

BIANCA: Huh. 100% makes the image the same size as the original photo. To make it larger, the setting has to be greater than 100%. Well, in the original photo, the king is a foot tall. In life, he is six feet tall. That means, I need to make an image that is six times the size of the original, in both height and width. So I'll try 600%.

MANAGER: Is the job done? The king just called. He'll be by in a few moments to pick it up.

BIANCA: NO PROBLEM. I just need to print it out.

MANAGER: I'm impressed. The king will be so pleased. Would you like to meet him?

BIANCA: Really? I'd love to. But I'm not really dressed to meet royalty.

KING: Geez. Thanks. Wow. He's tall, just like me. How'd you do dat? You must be real smart. Huh Huh Huh.

BIANCA: The manager said he'd call me when a position opens up. In the meantime, though, I decided against spending big bucks on a dog. I'll just go to the animal shelter. mutts make great pets, you know.
