This audio segment from PRI's The World Science Podcast takes us into the classroom in China, where a culture of rote memorization has long been favored over independent thinking. As a result, Chinese schools are not graduating innovators, including scientists and engineers, at a pace the government would like. A new kind of school in Beijing is challenging the traditional approach to learning, and China’s Ministry of Education is also trying to move public schools towards a more liberal education. But how successful will the effort be, given that critical thinking is in direct conflict with the ideals of the Communist Party?
